Sweet Sacrifice

—Mobaidul Sagor

Girl, do you see—
gazing at the blue sky—
I have spread my wings like a sea hawk, flying from your nest.
Pick them up—scatter them through the winter mist.
With the dusky Kashmiri swans, go—
and build a home together in the reed forest of Wular.

Let my sorrows be trampled underfoot, dry and brittle.
Girl, do you see—
in the garden of poppies—
the pollen unites uncontrollably, birthing sin.
After the honeymoon, crossing the Pir Panjal, that spring—
in that sudden city—was my sweet sacrifice.
Among the white Caspian rabbits,
my joys will grow mouths to nibble at tender grass.
